Zakladatelé společnosti byli Bill Bowerman (trenér lehké atletiky, inovátor tréninků na University of Oregon) a jeho de facto svěřenec Phil Knight, který běhal na středních tratích. Razili zajímavá hesla, např. „Každý kdo má tělo, je sportovec“. Původně zamýšleli vyrábět běžecké boty, jejichž funkčnost a zpracování by umožňovaly dosahovat stále lepších atletických výsledků, od svého záměru ovšem uhnuli. Psal se rok 1962 a oni postupně začali dovážet boty z Japonska prostřednictvím firmy Blue Ribbon Sport. Bohužel nebyli úspěšní a tak rozjeli výrobu bot vlastních. Na trhu se značka Nike objevila až v roce 1972, a postupně je výroba sportovní obuvi a doplňkového ošacení dostala na 1. místo ve světě. Logo Nike, tzv. swoosh má asociovat pohyb, rychlost a dynamičnost.
